Dress for Successful Outdoor Exercise in the Cold
By Tom Herrin
It isn't always easy to make the best choices when it comes to what we will wear when exercising. Some of it is simple, and that is when temperatures are pleasant. When this changes a bit, it can create much greater challenges. The cold can be something that may even be dangerous. If we get caught out in it, and have trouble, the outcome can be bad. Knowing how to manage dress properly for a good workout when temperatures are cold can take more than a little bit of planning. If we use layers correctly, however, we should be able to expect a successful session.
What Is Closest to Us
The inside layer is obviously the start of what we do. It is now recommended that it be tight-fitting. Since we definitely don't want to be wet, it should wick away moisture and allow air to flow. This will make it much more comfortable and keep it lighter weight. Working out with clothes that are drenching wet from perspiration is pretty miserable. With the newer technology available for manufacturing clothing, this layer has taken on a very different look.
Insulate in the Middle
The second layer may serve to actually do the job of keeping us warm. This layer should be thick, lightweight, and bulky. This allows it to have the air spaces needed to buffer the air temperature. If it is slow to heat and slow to cool, it can work best. It also must allow moisture to escape. This layer is the one that may often have removable parts and extras. it is pretty important for temperature regulation.
The Outside Layer Should Be Tough
As with most things that cover something, the outside layer needs to be able to protect. This protection may be from the rain and wind. It also may need to be capable of protecting you from general abrasions and such. This layer is best if designed so that it can be easily removed. It still must help moisture to be successfully removed, and air should be able to circulate. A well-designed outer layer is what makes the outfit a finished product. For the most part, this complete outfit can help to make your exercise work as well in cold temperatures as others do in warm ones. We want to keep on making progress.
