Yes! A Little Exercise is Better Than None

By Genevieve Cunningham

For some people, finding time to make it to the gym is really hard. Between work and real life, there's just not any time to squeeze in a workout. For many, this simply means that exercise gets left far behind. If you can only work out for five minutes, what's the point, right? But actually, even a little bit of exercise is likely better than none. If you've been skipping your exercise routine, take a look at why squeezing in a tiny bit of movement might be worth it.

Does That Exercise Really Count?

For the shortest answer possible, yes, it counts! Any time that we move our bodies and engage in activity, we burn calories and work the muscles. Walking through the parking lot, taking the stairs, five minutes of yoga, one lap around the pool. All of these can help improve our health. It might not be ideal to work out for only a few minutes, but it's better than spending that time sitting around.

Don't Count on Your Best Body

If you can only squeeze in small movement here and there, awesome! Do it! But keep your expectations real. You're not going to earn your best body if you don't put in the work. You won't look like a model, and you may not even be able to lose every pound that you wish. But even small movements can lower risk of disease, help with weight maintenance, and improve flexibility. Expect better health, even if it's not as drastic as you'd like.

Move When You Can

So how can you really squeeze in movement during the day? It's easier than you think. Start with a simple stretch when you roll out of bed. Five minutes is plenty of time to stretch the body. When you get to work, park at the back and walk. If you're on a low enough floor, skip the elevator and take the stairs. At lunch, walk around the block a couple of times. At night, take your whole family on a walk at the park. There are so many ways to get movement into your day. Don't fall into the trap of a sedentary life. Move when you can and trust that it's making a difference.

It's really OK if you don't have time for a full workout. But don't let that excuse hold you back! Get as much movement as you can, and enjoy the boost in health and attitude that is likely to come along with a more active life.
