How to Handle a Health Crisis During an Emergency
By Brandi Swieter
Emergency situations are already difficult to deal with and provide a tense environment. Add a health crisis on top of that and it can turn matters worse quickly. People should always be prepared to know how to handle a health scare even during an emergency so they can ensure the right action gets taken when the situation truly arises.
Always Be Prepared
It may seem like it would be impossible to be prepared for anything, but that’s exactly what people need to try to do. Emergencies can come on at any time, making it necessary to have things ready for when they do. It would be wise to put together an emergency bag or kit that includes the essentials. Not only would it provide the water and food necessary during a regular emergency, but it could help during a health crisis in the emergency situation as well. Pack a first-aid kit, various types of medicine, such as Tylenol, anti-diarrhea pills, and antacids, along with any prescriptions that may be needed regularly. Having all of these items together in one place ensures people know where to go when a crisis hits.
Another thing to add to the bag is a list of emergency rooms and urgent care centers. Do not only include ones in the nearby vicinity, but some a couple towns over, as well. ERs tend to get crowded during emergencies, so there may not be enough space to treat everyone at the time. Have the address information and phone numbers written down for all possible locations that would be possible to access when needed.
Get Some Rest
It’s easy for people to have a hard time sleeping when disaster is happening around them. Those who are unhealthy need the rest, though, and should not miss out on much needed sleep while they’re sick. Sick individuals need to do their best to find a safe place to rest and try to get as much shut-eye as possible while they can. The more sleep a person can get, the faster they can help themselves heal and ensure they’re strong enough to make it through their situation.
Each person should always make their health a top priority. It is best to be prepared and take precautions for when emergency situations arise, as well as use precautionary methods before danger hits to ensure optimal health for the challenge.
