Several Stretches Chiropractors Say Ease Pain

By Brandi Swieter

It's easy for pain to develop but often difficult to get it to go away. Stretches provide one way to help relieve some of the tension felt throughout the body. Whether it's located in the neck, shoulders, back, or elsewhere, there are some stretches chiropractors say can help to ease pain and provide relief when done correctly and regularly.

Side Neck Release

Sit up straight and point your chin toward your right arm. Place your right hand over your head and pull it gently downward until you feel a stretch. Hold this for a few seconds. Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite side. This stretch should release some tension felt in the neck and shoulders.

Chest Opener

Tight chest muscles can cause the body to pull forward. This in turn tightens up the back muscles as well. The Chest Opener stretch does well to ease tension in both areas of the body. Stand up tall and clasp your hands behind your back. Make sure your arms are lowered and lift your chin slightly until you feel the stretch near your throat.

Pelvic Lift

The lower back is a common cause for concern. Many people express their need for pain relief in this area. A pelvic lift is one exercise that can help. Lay on the floor with your feet flat and knees bent. Raise your hips slightly and hold the position for a few seconds. Drop to the floor slowly and then repeat the upward movement.

Knee to Chest

Lay flat on the back. Grab one knee and pull it toward the chest. Hold for four counts. Continue this stretch on the same side for a few times. Now grab the other knee and pull it toward the chest, also holding for four counts. Do the stretch on this side for a few times as well. For the third round, grab both knees to bring them toward the chest to hold in place. Breathe deeply and focus on releasing the tension. Release the knees and lay flat on the ground, and then repeat with both knees again several times. This will give quite the stretch to the lower back.
