A Chiropractor's Guide to Pain-Free Cleaning
By Brandi Goodman
Cleaning is often a top priority once the holiday season approaches. Many families have guests over frequently for dinners, parties, gift-exchanges, and more and want to keep a clean home in the process. Avoid back pain while you work by following a chiropractor's guide to pain-free cleaning.
Start By Stretching
Cleaning is an activity that requires movement. As with any other activity, stretching is going to be necessary beforehand. This will ensure your joints remain as flexible as possible and can handle the many tasks you'll have to complete. You'll prevent injury as well.
Use Proper Techniques
Several cleaning duties require the proper technique if you hope to complete them without pain. When washing laundry, for example, it's best to keep one leg extended backward as you lean forward and reach into the machine. This way, your back remains straight and you're not hunching over as you grab what's in the wash.
While vacuuming, you should use lunges. This technique ensures your back is staying upright and you aren't reaching too far forward or leaning over as you move across the floor with the machine in hand. Your hips and shoulders should be the main source of stability so your chances of developing back pain is reduced.
Dishes require the right technique as well. Make sure one of the cabinet doors is open so you can rest a foot inside. Standing in place with both legs straight will cause lower body pain quickly. If there's just a few dishes to wash then standing the regular way may suffice, but it won't hold up well when you have a sink full. A foot resting inside the cupboard can take some pressure off. Be sure to alternate which foot gets to rest.
Take Time Off
You don't want to complete all of your cleaning at once. Take time off between each chore and you'll be able to rest and recuperate. Pushing yourself too hard will cause your body to ache quickly. Stretch out, sit, and rest for a few minutes, at least between each task, for the best results. You may even want to stop for a while and continue later in the day or the next day so you don't do too much at once and hurt yourself.
Cleaning tasks can cause significant back and neck pain if you aren't careful. Visit The Joint Chiropractic at one of more than 475 locations if you do start to experience any. A body that is properly aligned and free from joint restrictions will be better able to handle cleaning duties.
