Parents and Kids: How to Balance the Health of All
By Genevieve Cunningham
Being a parent is not an easy job. In fact, it's incredibly hard. Kids demand so much of our time and energy. It's hard to keep up! And when we've been sleep deprived and screamed at and dealt with sick kids for days in a row, it's also hard to stay healthy. Finding the balance between healthy kids and healthy parents is really hard to do -- but it's also extremely important. If you need help finding that fine line, take a look at these tips to help you out.
Set Boundaries
Boundaries are key. If you don't set boundaries for your kids, everyone's health is going to suffer -- both mentally and physically. Kids need boundaries about behavior, bedtimes, diet, sleep -- you name it. They need to know when it's self-care time for you. They need to have boundaries about taking all of your energy and time. Determine which boundaries are right for your family, and stick with them consistently to improve everyone's well-being.
Follow Routines
Routines are essential for good health. We need routines in the morning and at night. We need routines about meals and exercise programs. And it's best if you do these routines as a family. Help your kids learn routines by participating in them yourself. Wake up on time, eat breakfast, stretch, get ready -- whatever your routine needs to look like. And then help each child set a routine that works for them as well. This is a habit that can follow them into adulthood for a healthier life long-term.
Grow As a Family
We're always growing and changing as people. We learn new things and adjust our behavior. While it's good to grow and change, it can also be good to try to do this as a family. Research nutrition and then cook healthy recipes together. Research exercise and then try out a new gym together. The more you learn and do together, the more cohesion you build with your family, and the easier it is to expect good health for everyone involved.
It's hard to find the balance between keeping your kids and yourself healthy. But with some patience and practice, it's definitely possible. Use these tips to get started, and your whole family will experience better health as a result.
