Staying Healthy During Flu Season

By Virginia Laird

Body ache, headaches, and nausea are among the variety of symptoms which accompany the flu. While no one advocates to contract this virus, many will suffer from it each year, putting life as normal on hold for a week or two. There are a few tips offered by healthcare professionals which can help you keep the flu at bay. Although, it is important to note: There is no way to completely eliminate the chances of you coming down with the flu. A few tips to help decrease your odds include:

  • Make sleep a priority
  • Eat well balanced meals
  • Stay home when sick

Make Sleep a Priority

The body needs sleep to keep the immune system properly functioning. This is the system which plays a vital role in preventing illness from taking over the body. Professionals recommend adults get at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. This can be a challenge for those with small children. Nevertheless, getting enough sleep to remain healthy should be a priority, especially during flu season.

Eat Well Balanced Meals

Eating a well balanced diet is another way to improve your health and help prevent illness. The body needs balanced nutrition to work properly. When the body lacks such nutrition, it can prevent the body from functioning properly. Research suggests it is wise to indulge in a colorful diet. This would be making certain to include green vegetables along with a variety of others.

Stay Home When Sick

Many find it difficult to slow down, even if illness has taken over the body. However, the best thing for the body is to rest. Staying home when you are sick accomplishes three things.

  • It allows time for the body to rest and recover from the germs that have begun a battle with your immune system.
  • It keeps you from sharing your sick germs with those around you.
  • It can also prevent you from getting another illness on top of whatever you already have

When the body’s health is already compromised, it is more susceptible to catching everything around. Staying home can help you get well sooner so that you can get back to your daily routine. Because let’s face it: No one has time to be sick!

With the holidays in full bloom, you are certain to find yourself in large crowds, parties, and family gatherings. Make sure to do all you can to protect your family from falling victim to the flu. Good luck and may your home be flu-free this holiday season!
