Give Yourself a Break for Better Health
By Tom Herrin
Contrary to what some may believe, it is not necessary for people to sacrifice everything they have in life. Success is not really measured by what they have or can accumulate. If that is the measure, then the whole picture may be distorted. The reality is that the real measure of success may not be visible on the surface but may lie within the individual. This can be in the form of physical, emotional, or mental health. One thing for certain is that the American dream should include a vacation for all who want to live it. It may be far more critical to overall health than all of the superficial things combined.
Vacations May Improve Sleep
More people seem to be affected by sleep problems today. This can be evidenced by the number of commercial sleep aides on the market. There are all kinds of specialized programs as well. Whether it is caused by caffeine, electronics, busy minds, or whatever, the problems are real. Lack of sleep has been attributed to causing accidents and illnesses. Some studies have shown that those who take vacations may actually improve their sleep habits. This does not appear to be due to simply being off. It seems that the results last for quite a while after people return from those vacations.
Vacations May Improve the Brain’s Neuroplasticity
There are plenty of big words that may be used to describe brain function. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to take in information and do something with it. It is part of the process of creativity. This requires the brain to enhance its thinking process by going an extra step and forming solutions or new ideas. Vacations are believed to make this work better.
Vacations Can Reduce Stress
We are all aware of the fact that when we take a vacation, we may breathe a sigh of relief. It is a natural consequence of time off. There may be more to it however. A vacation may help to reduce depression also. Many people get that feeling of being trapped with no place to turn. It can lead to some serious health and relationship problems. A vacation may serve as a buffer between you and a lot of those problems. Take a vacation and keep stress and depression out of your life.
