Manage Exercise in the Cold With Layers

By Tom Herrin

Exercising outdoors can be a great experience.  We get to view nature while taking in what we may feel is fresh air.  There is something that drives me when I am able to do that.  As a committed bicycle rider, I made a decision a few years ago to ride every day possible.  This was great as long as the weather was nice and the temperature was moderate.  Once it began to cool off, it was quite a bit different.  I determined that I would ride if the temperature was above 30 degrees, so finding a way to dress accordingly became a big concern.  Many times, I would begin too warm and have to go back and change while other times I would be too cold and never warm enough to continue.  Today's sports apparel offers much better solutions to this problem.  By using layers, it is possible to  make things work in all kinds of temperatures.

First Things First

The layer closest to the body has its own uniqueness.  Many people recommend that this layer be tight-fitting and lightweight.  To avoid you having to deal with wet clothes, it should wick away moisture and allow good airflow.  Anyone who has worn sweats in the past and had to attempt to be physically active while saturated with perspiration can appreciate something that can keep them dry.

The Next Layer

At least one layer should keep us warm, and it is the middle layer.  This layer should be insulated to help maintain a more constant temperature.  This will generally be bulky but lightweight.  Avoiding rapid heating or cooling will make this more successful.  It is easily done with traditional materials such as wool, fleece, or down, but there are many newer materials that are well-designed to meet the task.  Some of these will have pockets, zippers, etc. that are useful as well.

A Protective Layer

The outermost layer needs to offer protection.  It should be tough and able to resist rain, wind, and anything that can fit us or scrape us.  It also needs to allow air and moisture to flow through it.  If this layer has parts that are removable, it will be helpful in making quick adjustments to your overall personal comfort.  In order to stay motivated and keep on working out, this layer needs to support your efforts.
