Keep Your Feet Happy for Your Health

Your feet are the foundation upon which your health and wellness are built. If you care for your feet appropriately in any situation, then you’re a step ahead when it comes to overall health. Here are some tips to help you care for your feet the right way.

During the Day

The shoes you wear each day that:

  • Aren’t too flat - Shoes that are too flat or flexible are bad for your feet, such as ballet flats or flip-flops. They don’t offer enough support, plus they cause the muscles in the foot and toes to strain in order to grip the shoe as you walk.
  • Have some flexibility - So you want some flexibility, just not too much. The sole of the shoe should flex enough to let your joints and muscles move freely.
  • Go for large toe boxes - You don’t want to your toes to be squished together, so avoid narrow toe boxes. Make sure you can wiggle and spread your toes in a shoe.
  • Shop later in the day - At the end of the day, your feet will be swollen and at their largest, so shoe shop in the evening to make sure you have a shoe that fits well when your feet are at their largest.

When You Exercise

When it comes to shoes for your workout, buy shoes that are made for the activity you’ll be doing while you wear them. So, if you plan to run, buy running shoes. If you plan to hike, buy hiking shoes -- and so on. Also, keep in mind that any shoe you’ll be clocking a lot of miles in will need to be replaced often -- at least every six months.

When You Dress Up

Women often wear heels when they dress up, but heels are not good for your body. They move your center of gravity forward, place unnecessary strain on your back and knees, and shorten your Achilles tendon and hamstring if you wear them too much. When you do wear them, don’t wear heels taller than three inches and take small steps so you don’t have to lean too far forward when you walk.
