Tips to Keep Your Treadmill Workout Exciting

By Sara Butler

A man completed a full marathon on a treadmill once. His other hobbies may have included watching paint dry and enjoying plain toast because that's about the level of excitement you can expect from going 26.2 miles on the treadmill. If your treadmill workouts have felt more like "dreadmill" workouts, then you need to pump up the excitement. Here are a few tips to help you keep your time on the treadmill a bit more interesting.

Turn Up the Tunes

One of the best things about a treadmill workout at the gym is taking the time to really get into the music you're listening to. That's because walking on the treadmill inside doesn't require you to pay attention to your surroundings like you do when you're outside. You can zone out without putting yourself in danger. Plus, music helps to add energy to your workout. Work on a playlist with all your favorite hits and go for it. Or learn something new with an audiobook or podcast.

Go for Commercial Interval Training

If you like to watch television while on the treadmill, then you can incorporate that into your workout. Get more bang for your workout buck by speeding things up during commercial breaks. When a commercial comes on, either increase the incline or the speed and get your heart rate up. When the commercials end, dial it back down the pace you were on before. It's a great way to burn more calories and make things more exciting.

Work Out With a Friend

You can make any workout a little more exciting by bringing a friend along. Training partners help to motivate you and distract you from what you're doing. Plus, working out with a friend on the treadmill is better than exercising outdoors because you can each go at a pace that's comfortable for you with fewer distractions so you can really get your gab on.

Work on Your Form

If you are bored during your treadmill workout, then distract yourself by thinking about your form. Are your shoulders back? Is your core engaged? Are you getting your arms into the swing of things and thinking about where you're placing your feet when you move? All of these things should be focused on in order to ensure you're using the right technique and the treadmill indoors is the perfect place to perfect it!

Don't throw in the towel on your treadmill workout. Instead, learn how to make it interesting and better!
