Pineapple: The Fruit Above All Fruits
By Stephen R. Farris
Looking for a great food to incorporate into your diet? Look no further than your produce aisle at your local supermarket and pick out some fresh pineapple. The fruit originated in South America, but can also be found in other tropical locations around the world.
Pineapple is a virtual smorgasbord of minerals and nutrients. A normal serving of pineapple (5.8 ounces) has only 82.5 calories, 1.7 grams of fat, a gram of protein, 21.6 grams of carbs, and 2.3 grams of fiber. It also contains Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, manganese, copper, thiamine, folate, potassium, magnesium, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and iron. It also contains, according to studies, traces of Vitamin A, zinc, Vitamin K, and calcium.
It's full of antioxidants and research shows that enzymes found in pineapple can help against inflammation disease. Some of the other benefits of incorporating pineapple into your diet are listed below.
Reduction in Cancer Risk
Research studies have shown that pineapple may actually lower your risk for certain cancers. That's because the compounds found in pineapple can help reduce oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. One of the compounds found in pineapple is bromelain, which has been shown in test-tube studies to suppress breast cancer cell growth, as well as skin, bile duct, gastric and colon cancers.
Immunity Booster
Pineapple -- due again to bromelain -- according to more studies and research, could give your immunity system a boost.
Arthritis Relief
Based on studies, another benefit of having pineapple as a part of your diet is that it may help people suffering from arthritis get a little more relief. Once again, it's because of all of those nutrients and vitamins, and the compound bromelain.
Recovery
When you're recovering from surgery or from an exhausting, strenuous workout, grab some pineapple. It could help reduce inflammation, swelling, and bruising.
The Fruit for Every Meal
Not only could pineapple help out in the above mentioned areas, it's a great addition to any meal, whether it's breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a delicious snack.
