Set SMART Goals to Lose Weight

By Rachel Carver

Weight loss requires planning. You need to prepare for setbacks and unexpected changes.

Goal setting is also an important part of a successful weight loss journey. Your goals should be intentional. Deciding to lose 30 pounds is not very specific. It does not address the path you will take to achieve this goal.

Implement SMART goals into your weight loss plan. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These goals will give you a path to follow. Additionally, you will challenge yourself and find ways to conquer these challenges. SMART goals also allow you to adjust your plan when you need to.

Here's how to set and track SMART goals.

Choose a Goal Tracker

You'll need a way to visually track your progress. Put your goals somewhere visible such as on your fridge or your desk. Find an app to keep your goals organized and share your progress with others.

Prioritize Goal Tracking

Stay consistent. Treat your health and fitness like an appointment you must keep. Schedule time on your calendar to reflect on your goals and progress. This will help you figure out what is working and what needs to be adjusted. Even five minutes each day is a good starting point.

Be Flexible

After you set your goals, be prepared for change. If you despise your workout or the veggies you prepped, you need to come up with something else. Use part of your reflection time to check in on your thoughts and feelings to know if you need to change it up. Find an exercise partner, join a gym, or research some new solo workouts to try at home.

Set New Goals

As you review your progress, you might need to set new SMART goals. Maybe you realize you need to revise something to achieve success. Or you need to incorporate more workouts into your schedule to achieve your desired outcome. Review your short-term goals once a week. Revisit long-term goals at least once a month. Regular goal check-ins will help you stay motivated to take the next step.

Setting SMART goals can help you learn about the foods and workouts you need to achieve success. Goals will also help you deal with unexpected stressors and even mindless snacking.
