Don't Start Your Day With Neck Pain!

It's hard enough as it is to wake up in the morning, but if you are grabbing your neck in pain as you roll over to hit the snooze button, mornings could be even tougher to greet. There are several reasons why your neck could be hurting after a night of rest. Some of them, such as an injury or the wear and tear of aging, may be out of your control, but others can be easily fixed with some minor changes to your life. Take a look at the following suggestions.

Your Pillow

Sleeping with your neck twisted or bent too far in any direction can lead to that morning pain you feel, but don't worry, there is a simple fix! One of the easiest changes you can make that can bring the relief you are looking for is to invest in a new pillow. Here are some suggestions on what to look for.

  • Side sleepers - Pick a pillow that supports your head and neck without tilting your head up too far
  • Back sleepers - Choose a pillow that keeps your head from tilting backward or forward too much and that molds comfortably to the shape of your neck

Your Position

Whether you are awake watching television or are deep in sleep, there are proper positions you should focus on. If you are simply resting in bed and enjoying a good book or your favorite show, you need to make sure that your body is properly supported without propping too many pillows behind your head. You want to maintain a neutral position with both your head and neck, and definitely want to avoid pushing them forward into an awkward position. You also want to maintain that same neutral position for when you sleep, so find a good pillow that offers plenty of support and comfort. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, too!

Stiff Muscles

Your problems may also arise if you carry your stress and tension in your shoulders and neck, so find some ways to relax! Learning how to stretch those muscles and treating yourself to a massage every now and then is a great way to loosen them up. Also, if you can strengthen them with daily exercise, they can support the neck while you sleep too!
