Too Many Oranges? Use Them Up!

By Donna Stark

Oranges, clementines, cuties ... whatever you buy or whatever you call them, they certainly know how to make an appearance during this time of year, don't they? For some, they are a family tradition with great symbolism, while for others, they are simply another option lining the case in the grocery store produce section. But however they end up at your house, there are sure to be squeals of joy because very few people can deny their perfect little taste of supreme sweetness.

Getting the Most Out of Your Oranges

You can never get too much of a good thing, right? Well, yes ... but when you have enough oranges to fill every spot on your kitchen counter, a good thing can suddenly go sideways. If you are collecting oranges faster than you can eat them, try these suggestions.

  • Marmalade - An excellent way to use up those extra oranges in your home is to make some marmalade. In addition to using it for your morning toast or a sweet dessert, you could also hand it out to friends, coworkers, and neighbors.
  • Potpourri wheels - Slice your oranges into "wheels" and let them dry. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, and flowers to make amazing potpourri sachets or add them all to boiling water and scent your entire house!
  • Juice - Cut your oranges in half and juice them for the best tasting morning drink around. In fact, it's so good, you will want to drink it throughout the entire day!
  • Bird feeder - Save those peels from juicing (half of the orange) and use them to feed your feathery friends outside. Mix up a little birdseed and some popcorn with peanut butter and place that mixture into the peel. Secure with a string and hang it outside. The birds in the neighborhood will love it!
  • Candied orange peels - Another idea for all of those leftover peels is to make candied orange peels with them! There are a ton of recipes that you can find online that show you how to make these easy candies step-by-step.  Save them for the family or hand them out as gifts alongside your homemade marmalade!
  • Orange sugar scrub - Zest those oranges and mix with some olive oil and sugar for an inexpensive, homemade citrus sugar scrub. Hand these out as gifts as well, or be secretly selfish and keep them all to yourself. Your skin will never feel better!

Orange You Glad for These Ideas?

Sure, the easiest thing to do with all of your oranges this season would be to just eat them. But if you want to get the most from your stash, and if you like to experiment with new projects, they are the perfect medium to work with. On top of that, they are natural and inexpensive. So if one idea doesn't work, no worries! You can probably still find someone to gift it to ... or just leave it outside for the birds.
