Better Sleep With Simple Lifestyle Changes

By Donna Stark

The quality of sleep you get each night can be the determining factor in more than how well your days go. It can have a significant effect on your overall health and wellness, too. Fortunately, many of us get plenty enough sleep each night, but there are some who can't seem to find the rest they need, and as a result, have to deal with decreased cognitive function, frazzled nerves, and poor immunity. If you are one of those people who struggle to get the sleep your body requires, there is some good news. You can actually improve the quality of your sleep with just a few simple lifestyle changes. Check them out below.

Exercise

It's important to exercise regularly, but you don't want to be exercising right before your bedtime. Physical activity increases your heart rate and adrenaline levels which may make it harder for you to wind down at night, so schedule your workouts for earlier in the day.

Avoid Stimulants

Coffee, tea, soda, alcohol, and energy drinks ... if you are having trouble falling and staying asleep, these are the types of beverages that you should avoid. And if you can't completely eliminate them from your diet, just make sure you don't consume them in the evening.

Adhere to a Schedule

Your body likes healthy food and daily exercise, but what it really likes is a set sleeping schedule. Stay consistent with the times that you wake up and go to sleep each day. Your body will respond much better to that than to an inconsistent sleeping routine.

Ditch the Electronics

Maybe you feel like an extra hour of work before bed will do you some good or perhaps you like to browse through social media at night. Whatever it is that you like to do on your electronic devices, just be sure to turn them off at least an hour before you go to bed. Activities like those tend to stimulate the mind at a time when it should be doing the opposite.

Design a Sleep-Friendly Bedroom

The design of your bedroom should promote quality sleep, so take the proper steps needed to achieve that. Make sure your room is dark, cool, and quiet. Invest in a good mattress and pillow set, and if needed, purchase noise machines to drown out any outside disturbances.
