Healthy Foods that Taste like Candy

By Sara Butler

Many people seem to have a pretty serious soft spot for sweets. But just as many people understand that candy isn’t the best choice for your health. If you have a serious sweet spot but aren’t sure where to turn to quench it, then you need to look for healthier options. Here are a few healthier foods that are almost as sweet as candy. Just beware! They may be healthier, but that doesn’t mean you can have as much as you want. All things in moderation.

Dried Fruit

If you love a good gummy, then try out dried fruit. They usually contain fewer calories than gummy bears and also have the added benefit of fiber and Vitamin C, as well as other minerals your body needs.

Just remember that dried fruit has more concentrated calories than the fresh fruit it was made from. So, you can’t eat the same amount of dried apricots as you would fresh. Dried fruit is going to have more calories and sugar than the fresh stuff.

Consider mixing dried fruit with nuts to help reduce the amount you eat in a sitting.

Greek Yogurt with Fruit and Honey

Plain Greek yogurt can really help you squash your sugar craving, especially when you pair it with honey and fruit. It will satisfy your sweet tooth and provide the texture that a dessert offers. Plus, it has protein and fiber to help keep you healthy.

Frozen Bananas

If you’re in the mood for something cold, then try making your own frozen bananas. You can dip them into dark chocolate and nuts to make you feel like you’re really having a treat. Bananas are a great source of potassium, which has been associated with a reduction of blood pressure and risk of stroke.

Popcorn

Popcorn is a whole grain treat -- as long as you leave the butter and salt off. You can air pop popcorn and dust it with a little bit of cinnamon and sugar to give it a sweet punch. This treat is low in calories as long as you go easy on the sugar and heavy with the cinnamon.

You can have sweet treats without killing your healthy eating goals. All you need is some know-how about where to find naturally sweet foods that are good for you!
