4 Healthy Habits to Start This Year

By Brandi Goodman

Your health should always be a priority, yet so many people let their well-being go out the window. Unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms can work short-term to deal with stress, but it will catch up with you sooner rather than later. Start some new healthy habits this year to better your health and keep your body and mind feeling strong.

Add a Fruit and Vegetable to Every Meal

You're supposed to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Many don't even get that much, let alone the nine recommended on the higher end of the scale. Try adding a bit of fruit and vegetables to every meal so you up your serving count. They'll help you get the necessary vitamins and nutrients your body needs.

Use What's Around You for Exercise

Exercise is necessary in our everyday lives. Just because you can't hit the gym or get outdoors doesn't mean you can't still work out. Use what's around you for exercise. Do tricep dips on your couch or jog up and down your stairs. Your furniture and surroundings can all be utilized.

Switch to Flavored Water

Plain water is really what you should be drinking, but people often prefer something flavored. Instead of drinking soda pop and caffeine, at least switch to flavored water. You can buy it bottled at the store or use flavor packets at home added to regular water. Find the versions using sucralose or another substitute instead of actual sugar. It's also best to stick to low or no-calorie options. You should try to drink plain water when you can, but these flavored versions are much better alternatives to a lot of other beverage choices.

Set a Sleep Routine

Getting enough sleep at night will help you make it through your day. It can be difficult to get adequate rest when you have a lot on your mind, though. Set a sleep routine so you're better able to start falling asleep each night and maintaining a good sleep habit. Do what you need to relax and help yourself drift off, sticking to the same sleep and wake schedule every day of the week.

Starting these healthy habits can help you on a better path of health and well-being. You don't have to do them all at once. You can give one a try and become accustomed to the practice before adding the next healthy habit into your daily routine.
