Getting Your Resolutions Back on Track

By Donna Stark

Let's take a moment to review the past few months, shall we? How have your New Year's resolutions been going? Are you meeting your goals or do you just want to say it is still a work in progress? Those first few weeks of the year are filled with great intentions but by the end of March those intentions aren't always as strong as they start out to be, are they? And unfortunately, when April swings around, many people have already thrown in the towel. Hopefully, you are not one of those people, but if you are, don't worry. There are some easy ways to get yourself back on track!

April Resolutions

If your New Year's resolutions have fizzled more than they have sparked and if you have come to the conclusion that a healthy lifestyle is just too hard to maintain, you may need to change course. Many resolutions simply start out being too unrealistic and impractical for anyone to keep long-term, and usually need to be modified at some point or another down the road. If you are at that point right now, take a look at these simple tips that will help you switch gears. They may seem small, but boy are they powerful!

  • Downsize your goals - If those really big goals seem too overwhelming to manage, you may want to rethink your strategy. Setting smaller, more achievable goals works out better in the long run for so many people. For example, instead of promising to drink a gallon of water every day, start off by committing to drinking a glass of water at every meal. By accomplishing smaller goals, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and may be motivated to do even more.
  • Add to your diet - When many people try to change their diet they generally think about eliminating foods, but sometimes, it may be more important to think about what should be added to your diet instead. Things like fresh fruit and vegetables, fatty fish, whole grains, and heart-healthy fats are just a few examples of what you should be eating more of.
  • Make it convenient - When it is easy to make a healthy choice, you will be more likely to stick with it. So join a gym that is located close to your home. Wash your fruit immediately after shopping and keep them handy to grab. Make a pitcher of cucumber-infused water at the beginning of the week and fill your water bottle with it every morning. Easy decisions like these can quickly turn into lifelong, healthy habits.

Getting Back on Track

No matter what month of the year it is, there is nothing wrong with pushing the reset button on your New Year's resolutions. So don't throw in that towel. There are still plenty of gains to be made yet!
