Health Issues You Can Spot By Looking At Your Eyes

Your eyes are the windows to your soul, or at least that is what they say. They are not just the window to the soul though, they are also a great way to determine a person’s health. Why do you think that doctor’s always check your eyes during a physical? It isn’t always just about how well you can see, it is about your overall body health.

Your eyes can be an early warning sign for serious health issues, so knowing more about your eye health, can help you learn more about your overall health.

Diabetes

If you have leaky blood vessels in your eye, that is a sign that someone may be diabetic. Diabetes is known to cause serious problems with vision, and even cause people to go blind. If you notice this warming sign when you look in the mirror, talk with your doctor about it. Catching diabetes early and treating it with a healthier lifestyle is key to protecting your health.

High Blood Pressure

When’s the last time your doctor checked your blood pressure? High blood pressure is cause for many deaths, and it can be prevented and spotted early – just look at your eyes. As a person lives with high blood pressure, the arteries in the eye will begin to narrow and will become silver or copper in color. This is a clear indication of high blood pressure.

High Cholesterol

High cholesterol, as we all know, is caused by plaque forming in the blood vessels of the body. The blood vessels in the eye are not immune to this, and it is easy for an optometrist to find plaque in the blood vessels of the eye just by looking at them. They will appear as a thin, gray rim around the cornea, and if left long enough, it can cause a temporary loss of vision.

Brain Tumor

Few things are as scary, or worse, than a brain tumor. An eye exam can show if someone has a brain tumor without ever needing to do an MRI. If there is swelling or shadows in the eye that is a sign that there may be a tumor in the brain, or the possibility of clots that can cause strokes. More tests are needed in this case, but the appearance of your eyes can be an early sign that just might save your life.

When’s the last time you really looked into your eyes? Check out your peepers in the mirror today to make sure that they aren’t showing any signs of poor health.
