How to Stay Safe During Outdoor Workouts

By Genevieve Cunningham

Working out outdoors can feel so good. There’s something about the sun, the breeze, and the challenge of working out outside that makes it incredibly appealing. But it can also be difficult. When you’re outdoors, you’re right in the middle of the elements. There isn’t any hiding from them, and there certainly isn’t any controlling them. This can make your exercise routine both a challenge as well as dangerous, depending on the conditions. So how can you protect yourself? It’s easy! If you want to keep working out outside, take a look at these ways to keep yourself safe.

Time It Right

Timing is everything. If it’s the middle of summer, you should probably avoid working out in the afternoon. This will be the hottest point of the day, and the time that you’ll be most likely to suffer from overheating. Instead, aim for working out early in the morning or in the evening. Time the workout right, and it will be enjoyable without the risk of getting too hot.

Be Prepared

You never know what you’re going to encounter in the great outdoors. That’s why it’s better to simply be prepared. Carry sunscreen, a light jacket, a hat, and extra socks. Make sure that you’ve looked at the weather to avoid big storms or other phenomenons. Carry an umbrella or raincoat, just in case. The more prepared you are, the easier it is to complete your exercise program in the event that something out of the ordinary happens.

Stay Hydrated

It doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold outside, staying hydrated is absolutely important. Make sure that you have a water bottle (or two or three!) with you at all times. Sip your water, but don’t gulp or you might get a stomachache. Just make sure that you’re getting plenty of water in order to protect your body from the heat, cold, wind, and sun.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

You need to pay attention to your surroundings at all times. Are you in a busy area? You need to watch for cars, strangers, and other potential problems. Are you in a secluded area? Be on the lookout for other people, animals, and general wildlife. Being aware of our surroundings will definitely help in keeping you safe, but it can can also make the workout more challenging. See that hill? Run up! Notice those stepping stones? Get in some jump squats! Be aware at all times to keep yourself protected.

Working out outside is a great idea. But if you want to really make it work, it’s important to protect yourself. Use these tips to keep yourself safe and to make the most of your outdoor workout both now and long into the future.
