3 Gentle Ways to Start Your Day With Movement
By Genevieve Cunningham
Moving your body is key to a healthy life. And surprising to many, it may also be the key to a healthy and productive morning. Movement allows our bodies to both burn and build energy. It’s a way to enhance focus and turn on the creative side of our brain. And of course, it’s a healthy habit that gets us in tune with our bodies and helps keep us well. But let’s face it: Moving in the morning is hard! For most of us, simply getting out of the bed is hard, and so adding movement into the mix feels like an impossible task. But luckily, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Movement in the morning can be gentle and can even feel good. If you would like to add some movement to your morning, take a look at these three gentle ways to move, improve health, and start your day off well.
A Gentle Stretch
Our natural reaction in the morning is to stretch. It’s an easy way to work out stiffness, pull oxygen throughout the body, and make our muscles come alive. If this sounds good to you, try adding an intentional stretch to your morning. It can be yoga based, or it can be whatever feels good to you. Stretch for five or 10 minutes, or for however long you can manage. This helps you get just a little movement, burn just a few calories, and wake your body up in a slow and deliberate way.
A Slow, Steady Walk
Walking is completely underrated. It’s such a great way to get in shape, burn calories, use the muscles in your body, and feel better about yourself. If you have the time and space, try adding a slow but steady walk to your mornings. This is especially beneficial if it can be done outside where you can breathe fresh air and relax into nature. But no matter where your walk is accomplished, completing it in the morning can help you improve your health with gentle exercise that actually feels good to the body and mind.
An Easy Dance
Dancing really challenges the body and frees the mind. When you wake up, turn on your favorite music, and let yourself go for a few minutes. It’s a strange sense of both invigoration and relaxation to allow your body this free, playful movement. And the great part is that no one even has to see it, so any hesitation about dancing can be left behind. Try this each morning, and see if it improves your body and mind’s ability to cope with your day in a healthy and productive way.
The mornings can really make a significant impact on the remainder of your day. Start your day with intentional movement. Use these gentle moves to get started. You may find that with this one simple addition, you feel better and perform better on a regular basis for a greater sense of self-satisfaction and personal success.
