4 Things to Share With Your Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

Too many people try to avoid being honest with their chiropractors. Failing to reveal certain aspects of your medical history or current status or other traumas you endured may save you a bit of embarrassment, but it won't help you heal. You need to be sure to share these important things with your chiropractor so your doctor can know how best to help you.

Your Ongoing Medical Conditions

Any ongoing medical conditions you have need to be disclosed. Certain conditions cannot be treated with chiropractic. If you currently have cancer, for example, then chiropractic may not be advised. You don't want the chiropractor to press on an especially sore spot or circulate toxins that are causing serious harm to your body. Your doctor needs to know your full medical history so he or she can determine if treatment is right for you.

Your Current Medications

Medications can cause varying symptoms. Let your doctor of chiropractic know which ones you are currently taking or recently took so he or she can determine the best course of action. A treatment plan won't be accurate if all of your symptoms are not explained.

Your Surgical History

Perhaps you've had surgery in the past. Let your chiropractor know about this. They need to determine if it's safe for you to receive an adjustment. Some surgeries are minor and won't have an affect. Major surgeries may have caused scar tissue that leaves you with pain in that area. You may need a more gentle approach if this is the case. Anything traumatic that may have happened to you, such as a car accident, should be mentioned as well.

Your Lifestyle Factors

Your lifestyle also plays a role in the advice your chiropractor can give. If you don't disclose that you sit often watching TV, that you smoke, or that you never exercise, your doctor of chiropractic may not offer proper stretches, exercise techniques, or lifestyle changes to make your pain better. Being completely transparent will ensure the appropriate guidance is provided and utilized to help you recover.

It is imperative that you're always honest with your chiropractor or any doctor looking to help you. Your recovery process and reduction of pain depends on it. They've heard it all and understand not everyone leads a healthy life free of struggles. Chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic only want to help you receive the best treatment possible and help you ease your discomfort. They'll offer instructions for improving your well-being -- judgement free.
