How to Select a Backpack to Prevent Pain
By Virginia Laird
As your children head back to school, the thought of a backpack loaded with books can cause quite a stir. Although there is little you can do to prevent the need of toting around books, you can help your children learn a few tips to help prevent back pain caused by lugging the heavy load. A few of these tips include:
- Look for good straps
- Try not to overload your backpack
- A trip to your chiropractor can be helpful
Look for Good Straps
Not only should you look for a backpack with two straps, these straps should be comfortable. Chiropractors suggest that backpacks with padded straps can prevent the weight of the bag from digging the straps deep into the neck and back. This can cause a great deal of pain. Chiropractors also suggest that the straps should be wide. The wider the strap, the more distributed the weight. Straps should also be adjustable. A well-adjusted backpack is one in which the top of the bag rests between the shoulders.
Try Not to Overload Your Backpack
Although there will be a ton of items your child will feel like needs to be in the backpack, it is best to limit the load. For some, this may mean carrying an additional bag or purse for personal items. Chiropractors advise that piling too much weight into the backpack can be the culprit for severe back pain, and in many cases injury. It is also suggested that (especially when the backpack is heavy) the straps of the backpack be adjusted to fit the body more snugly. Chiropractors suggest the heavier the load, the closer to the body the weight should be carried.
A Trip to Your Chiropractor Can Be Helpful
