Friday Night Football Can Be Painful (Literally)
By Virginia Laird
Friday nights in the fall have many people under the lights of the local football field -- which can be painful. Certainly it is painful to watch the team you love get beat, but this is not the type pain to which I am referring. Let’s talk about the bleachers! I have yet to find a high school stadium equipped with comfy seats. Many fans may find their back hurting before halftime. Chiropractors refer to this as "bleacher back." If this is something that sounds familiar to you, rest assured there are a few things that can be done to prevent the pain, including:
- Use correct posture
- Invest in a lumbar car seat support
- Visit the chiropractor routinely
Use Correct Posture
When lacking appropriate back support, people may find themselves struggling to use correct posture. Chiropractors recommend those who spend time sitting without back support use stretches and exercises to help encourage correct posture. This does not mean a person need exercise between plays; simply standing for a few minutes or making a trip to the restrooms or concession stand can help relieve some of the stress the back may feel while sitting in uncomfortable bleachers.
Invest in a Lumbar Car Seat Support
Although the average car ride to the football game may be 30 minutes, this can still wreak havoc on the back. It is important to make sure the car ride is comfy. Chiropractors suggest those who suffer with back pain invest in an extra lumbar support device no matter the length of commute. Most car seats are not geared toward supporting the back. There are a wide variety of lumbar supports available; using one can help manage pain, as well as make the long journey to your next event more comfy.
Visit the Chiropractor Routinely
It is important to take care of the spine. Using routine visits to the chiropractor can help manage back pain caused by time well spent in the bleachers of a football game. Chiropractors can help release tension and stress in the back as well as restore function to the spine.
