Chiropractic Care for Those Pesky Growing Pains

By Donna Stark

Did your child wake up last night, complaining of pain again? Your pediatrician may already have told you not to worry and that the pain is nothing more than growing pains, but what exactly does that mean? Understandably, you may have a lot of questions. You may be wondering what causes them, how common they are, and if your child (and you for that matter) will ever get to sleep again? Fortunately, your local chiropractors deal with pain every day and may be able to help.

What are Growing Pains?

Typically, growing pains are an aching, throbbing, or cramping feeling in the legs. The pain often strikes in the evening and throughout the night but will usually disappear by morning. Although there is no danger from the pain, it does hurt and could interrupt your child's sleep.

Treatments for Growing Pains

There is no specific treatment for growing pains but there are some things you can do to help your child deal with them. Take a look.

  • Chiropractic care - If your child's pelvis is out of alignment, there is a chance that the risk of growing pains could be increased. An easy way to fix that is to bring your child in to see your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic. Chiropractic care can alleviate the pain by placing your child's body in correct alignment, decreasing inflammation, and restoring optimal function to the nervous system. The chiropractic approach is the perfect option for children because it avoids the use of prescription medications and encourages the body to heal itself naturally.
  • Massage and heat - Applying heat and massaging your child's legs can help soothe their sore muscles. Many people have found that giving their child a warm bath before bed can help too!
  • Stretching exercises - Having your child stretch every day may also help to reduce the risk of pain at night. If you aren't sure what stretches would be most beneficial, ask your chiropractor or doctor. They will get you on the right track!
