Kick These Foods Out of Your Freezer

By Sara Butler

Some really healthy things can be found in a freezer. Frozen vegetables and fruit are two incredibly healthy and convenient freezer foods you keep on hand, and freezing your proteins is a great way to extend their shelf life. However, there are many foods found in freezers around the country that simply aren't good for you. Here are some freezer foods you should get rid of now and never purchase again on behalf of your overall health and wellness.

Frozen Pizza

Yes, this one hurts -- but it's time to understand the truth. Frozen pizza simply isn't good for you.

The truth of the matter is that frozen pizzas are full of fat and salt. Many popular brands have twice your daily allowance of sodium per pie and almost an entire day's worth of calories to boot. If you want pizza, then make your own. It'll taste better and you can control what goes onto it!

Frozen Pie

Unfortunately, pie is not good for you. Frozen pie may be just a little bit worse! Pie is something that's best enjoyed in small doses and when homemade so that you don't get all the extra sugar, calories, and fat that you do from a mass-produced product.

Frozen Pastries

Yes, those pastries you can pop into your toaster oven may bring back some fond childhood memories, but you're far better off leaving them in your memories than making them a part of your present day. That's because frozen pastries have a lot of added sugar and are made from simple carbohydrates. They won't fill you up and worse, they'll make your blood sugar skyrocket and then crash just as fast as it shot up, leaving you hungry in the long run.

Frozen Sandwiches

Yes, these little frozen sandwiches may be convenient, but that's about all they can add in a positive way to your life. These types of convenience foods are packed with sodium, often providing half of your salt needs for the day in one tiny sandwich!

Frozen Dinners

TV dinners were all the rage back in the '50s, but they're definitely something that should have stayed part of history. These meals are simply unhealthy. They have a ton of sodium, fat, and calories that can contribute to weight gain and high blood pressure. If you need more convenience foods in your life, make your own dinners at home, portion them, and stick them in the freezer for the next time you're in a pinch.

The freezer serves a purpose, but you have to resist the siren call of junk food that is sold to be put in it.
