Helping Your Student Be Successful This School Year

By Virginia Laird

There are many things to consider when trying to figure out how to help your student become successful. For some, this is may be a measure of grades, while others may prefer to have it relate to behavior. No matter how you choose to determine the success, research indicates that students are more successful when parents get involved. A few tips to help you mold your child into a great student include:

  • Have a routine
  • Eat a balanced breakfast
  • Encourage a nightly bedtime
  • Make time to relax

Have a Routine

Research suggests that having a routine can promote health and wellness. It is recommended that those who want to help their student be more successful at school should include a routine that allows time to study, have some downtime, and do a few chores around the house. Health and wellness experts suggest that some routines should also include a bedtime that includes a 20-minute relaxation stretching and meditation time.

Eat a Balanced Breakfast

Students who are successful in school are those who make it a priority to eat breakfast routinely. If your child is anything like mine, the thought of food in the morning is undesirable. For this reason, we have turned to breakfast shakes to make sure she gets the proper nutrition to make her day successful. And for those who feel as though time does not allow for breakfast, there are a variety of meal replacement options to choose from.

Encourage a Nightly Bedtime

Health and wellness experts suggest that having a bedtime is the best way to make sure that your children get enough sleep. It is suggested that the average child get at least eight hours of sleep each night. However, there are some who need much more sleep than this. If you are unsure about how many hours of sleep you child may need, refer to this chart to help you decide what the right bedtime may be.

Make Time to Relax

Every successful student needs time to relax. If you are one who would like to help your student make good grades, it is vital to make sure there is some downtime in their week. This can be a trip to the movie theater, a swim in the pool, or simply a lazy evening at home. No matter what you decide to do, make sure your family enjoys at least one evening of rest and fun away from any homework.
