Understanding a Chiropractic Visit

By Randi Morse

One of the reasons why people don't choose to visit a chiropractor is because chiropractic care is a mystery to them. We all know what a visit to a doctor or a dentist will be like, but if you've never seen a chiropractor before, the fact that it is unknown may push you away from wanting to visit one. The truth is that a chiropractor can help you in a variety of ways, starting with helping to eliminate pain and stiffness. Chiropractors can also help you to keep your body in shape so that you are in a better place to avoid getting injured.

Understanding Your Spine

The average person's spine is made up of 24 independent vertebrae. This vertebra works together with your tendons and muscles to allow your body to twist, bend and lift. Almost everything you do, from sitting down to walking, involves your spine. What happens when one of these vertebrae goes out of alignment? Think of the spine like a column that is helping to hold a house up. If one column gets weak, the rest of the house may stay up, but it is nowhere near as sturdy as it was before. This is what it's like when one of your vertebrae goes out of alignment. A chiropractor is sort of like a carpenter, working to fix any problems and making your body sturdy again.

Your First Visit

Your first visit to a chiropractor is going to be fairly easy. During this visit the chiropractor is going to ask you questions and examine you in order to determine what has gone wrong in your body. Once they have made a preliminary diagnosis, they will discuss treatment options with you. Many times, back issues can be fixed with time, rest, and regular chiropractic visits.

Does It Work?

Again, if you've never visited a chiropractor and have only heard negative things about one, you may struggle with believing that regular chiropractic care can help eliminate pain while strengthening your body. A study by Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2016, however, says different. Published in the White Paper Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, this study found that the majority of the 85,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield beneficiaries in Tennessee were very happy with the results of their chiropractic care.
