Biking and Boating With Chiropractic In Mind

By Brandi Goodman

Two activities come to mind often when thinking of summer. Biking and boating are both summertime activities that many people enjoy on warm days. Though both are fun, they also can lead to pain if you aren't careful. Keep chiropractic in mind while enjoying these activities so you can finish them pain-free.

Biking

Kids and adults alike can enjoy bike riding. Both age groups can be left feeling sore after just a short time spent on a bike, though. You need to be sure you stretch out before riding so your joints are prepared. Your knees will particularly suffer if you don't. It's also important to drink plenty of water to keep your joints lubricated and your body hydrated. Everyone should make use of the water bottle holder so many bikes provide and bring one along with -- no matter the duration of the ride.

It's also wise to check that the fit of your bike is right for you. You need the proper size with a well-adjusted seat that won't leave you in pain. Kids shouldn't try to ride adult bikes and adults shouldn't try to ride bikes meant for children. The size difference will quickly cause you to hurt as you sit in an uncomfortable position.

Boating

A boat can provide hours of fun. It can also result in days of pain if you aren't careful. Rough waters will have your body crashing against the boat as it gets shaken around. You need to engage your abs and hold your core tight if you hope to maintain your stability and avoid hitting the sides of the vessel. Your joints can also get stiff if you're sitting in one position. You need to stand up carefully and stretch out your body every once in a while so this doesn't happen. Stiff joints can result in some serious aches.

It's also important to include a seat with a back on your boat. Many watercraft don't. Lots of vessels only include a small bench seat for you to sit on with nothing behind you to offer stability. Purchase a stadium seat that has a back on it at least so you can be a bit more comfortable during your ride.

No matter which activities you're planning this summer, a trip to the chiropractor should be your first stop. You want to be sure your body is in the best shape possible to handle all the exercise you'll be doing. Your chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic can ensure you have no restrictions in place that could inhibit the way your body moves or handles the activities you have planned.
