Benefits of Canned Tuna Fish

By Madhusudhan Tammisetti

Tuna lives in the deep ocean and is a good source of essential nutrients for the human body. Selenium, potassium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin B complex are some of the nutrients that may help prevent cancers and lower heart disease risk.

Tuna fish is rich in protein and low in fat and calories. For every 100 grams of meat, tuna has 22.6 to 26.2 grams of protein and has a fat content between 0.2 and 2.7 grams. Tuna also contains calcium, minerals, iron and sodium, phosphorous, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B.

Better Than Freshwater Fish

Compared to freshwater fish, tuna has 28 times more omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 helps in the development of the child. It also relieves arthritis, and reduces the risk of heart disease and asthma. It helps in lowering the blood cholesterol levels and helps in improving the good and bad cholesterol ratio.

Protein, Iodine and Vitamins

Tuna is packed with protein and mineral content. Protein in tuna is almost two times more than protein in eggs. For every 100 grams of tuna and eggs, they have 22 grams and 13 grams of protein, respectively.

The iodine content is 28 times more in tuna fish compared to freshwater fish. Tuna iodine helps in improving children's intelligence and prevents mumps. The selenium in tuna activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione peroxidase, which protects the body from free radicals that causes different types of cancer. Every 100 grams of tuna contains 52.9 percent selenium.

Tuna fish is rich in vitamins, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, and folic acid. Vitamin A helps in enhancing immunity, growth, reproduction in the body, and vision. Vitamin B6 and folic acid can help in lowering homocysteine levels. Homocysteine can cause heart disease and is harmful to arteries.

Omega-3 fatty acids increase the good cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration ratio in the human body. It reduces the clotting of blood in blood vessels.

Tuna helps prevent cancer, including pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancers, and other cancers related to the digestive tract, such as mouth cancer, stomach cancer, and intestine. Omega-3s in tuna is useful in preventing breast cancer and lowers the risk of leukemia in children.

Benefits

Tuna may help improve cognitive brain function and protect from Alzheimer's disease as it facilitates the blood flow from the body to the brain. It also helps in reducing the risk of inflammation.

Canned tuna is a good and inexpensive source of protein and nutrients. Canned tuna can last for several years, and you can store it in your pantry for lunches and snacks. Opt for low mercury varieties and choose products made with skipjack tuna with an MSC certification on the label.
