How to Make 40-Plus Your Best Performance

Age is a funny thing. No matter where you are, you often want to be somewhere else. Kids always want to be older. So do teens. Then come the adult years and age is OK until you turn the bend into your 30s and 40s and look a little closer. Now you may want to run faster, look slimmer or just be better as the years seem to pick up speed.

The people that I know who have been most successful in dealing with age all advise just making the most of every single day. Don't brood about it. Just get up and do it. They also suggest hitting these high points really hard to hold your own and make it all pay off.

Exercise like you mean it - Insert a daily workout, walk, jog or run into your schedule and show up for it. Two years from now you can't go back and pull a do-over, logging in all of those missed walks or runs, and your body may show the effects.

Eat like you know how food works - We all know the importance of fruits, veggies, nuts, dairy, poultry, and fish, but how many times a week do we hear the call of our favorite franchise and opt out for a juicy double double burger and fries or pepperoni and cheese pizza? Pack your diet with the healthy stuff and enjoy the difference in energy and a reasonable weight.

Learn how to subdue stress - Some stress gets us moving, but unchecked, floods of pressure can take their toll on the mind and body. The heart may pay a price too. Find a stress outlet that works for you and use it to keep smiling and keep your balance. Music, yoga, funny old movies, or daily runs may make the difference.

Pay attention to your body - Too often it is too easy to go into denial over those extra pounds, lack of exercise, or other distant drumbeat symptoms, but it never pays off. Keep your annual checkups and report any changes when they show up, the sooner the better. Body maintenance actually is more important than car maintenance and we just have to do it.

If you hit those high notes with good diet, lots of exercise, body maintenance and stress reduction, you really can make the 40s your best decade ever. Go for it.
