4 Alternatives to Jogging

By Virginia Laird

While the idea of taking in a long, luxurious jog may be tempting, not everyone is cut out for such a strenuous exercise. Research suggests, when jogging, a person's knees may feel the stress of up to three times a person's bodyweight. This type of exercise is considered to be high-impact, which can be conducive to joint pain. If jogging does not suit you, there is no reason to get down in the mouth, as there are plenty of other exercises a person can do that are just as good for the body. Exercises to consider include:

  • Go for a brisk walk
  • Take a yoga class
  • Try tai chi
  • Go for a swim

Go for a Brisk Walk

Walking is easier on the joints than a jog, but can be just as beneficial for the cardio system. Research suggests that walking as many as three miles a day can do just as much good for the body as running a mountain of miles. Brisk walks can build endurance, as well as burn calories.

Take a Yoga Class

While yoga is not a fast-paced class, it is great for the muscles. It focuses on various stretches and poses that challenge the muscles and offers toning. Yoga is great for the joints of the body. Another wonderful thing about this workout is its ability to relieve the mind of stress. Instructors are trained to help participants find balance in the mind and the body.

Try Tai Chi

Tai chi is a class based on the principles of martial arts. It is said to help relieve stress as well as anxiety. This class can include types of self defense methods. Like yoga, instructors are trained to help the participants find balance in meditation. Some of the benefits of tai chi include improved balance, increased flexibility, and has been reported to help some feelings of depression.

Go for a Swim

Swimming works every muscle in the body. It is great for the joints, as it is a zero impact activity. Swimming can build cardio and muscle strength. Another great thing about swimming is its ability to burn calories.

If you are looking for an alternative to jogging, give one of these exercises a try. Good luck and may you find a new exercise to enjoy!
