It's walking and yes, it can be an important component in your daily fitness routine. Walking as little as 30 minutes a day can improve your cardiovascular and pulmonary health, reduce your risk of disease, increase your bone and muscle strength, and improve your moods. Sound like a wonder drug? Maybe so, but only if you follow the tips and safety precautions below.

  • Schedule it - If you have trouble staying motivated, schedule your walks like you would for an appointment. This time of day should be a priority, so make sure the time you choose really works in your schedule. You won't stay consistent with it if it causes too many other problems. The good thing about walking, though, is that you can do it anywhere and for any length of time.
  • Add up your minutes - Speaking of time, if you can't fit a 30-minute walk into your schedule, try breaking it up into smaller bits. By getting off public transportation or parking further from the entrance of your destination, you could easily add 10 minutes to your total. And by taking the stairs and walking while on the phone, those minutes will continue to add up.
  • Invite a friend - Asking a friend or coworker to join you on your walks will help you stick to this commitment and hold you accountable. In addition to that, it's a great way to get some extra bonding time in.
  • Set goals - Are you more of a "numbers" person that likes to keep track of everything? Then start with a goal! Whether you end up counting steps or miles, there is nothing more motivating and exciting than to watch how well you are progressing!
