Does the Thought of Growing Old Scare You?

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of things to fear for those who let it happen.  Uncertainty is certainly high on the list for most people.  The fear of the unknown can make people feel insecure and shake their confidence.  Aging is one of those things that happens to everyone if they live long enough, but they don’t all have to age at the same rate.  The good news is that for those who like to be more in control of their own circumstances, it may be possible to slow some of the signs of aging and actually enjoy life as they do.

Some Signs Appear Slowly

As with so many other things, aging may creep up on people in small increments.  Many people as young as their thirties or forties may begin to see some of the signs in the form of numbers.  In other words, their blood pressure and blood sugar rise as their cholesterol worsens.  As muscles fade and fat increases, their waistlines increase.  Before they know it, many go from the picture of health to the image on a Norman Rockwell painting, and not the flattering kind.

There Is No Need To Despair

Studies have shown that even people who have lived sedentary lives can make positive changes in their behaviors and experience better health in a matter or week or months.  A good exercise program that is aggressive enough to tire them can turn many of those numbers around.  Exercise can also help to provide better sleep.  It can improve mobility that is often reduced as people fail to use their muscles sufficiently.  When combined with a good diet, it can be helpful in avoiding or managing type 2 diabetes that affects so many people.

More Control Can Give You Confidence

Anytime you feel that you have more ability to do something about your circumstances, you feel better about it.  Once you embrace a good program of any kind, you are sure to enjoy the results.  Being able to move around better is great.  With more quality sleep, you will look better as well as stay mentally more alert.   Find a diet that offers what you need.  Go low fat for a greater chance of actually increasing longevity because studies have shown it is the only proven way to improve genetic material.  When you are in control, there is little to fear.
