Kids Games Can Get You in Shape

By Tom Herrin

Looking for something to provide a little exercise can be a challenge.  There must be that right thing that can fit the needs. Everyone’s are different.  For someone who is just trying to get back into working out, or for someone who wants a light activity they can enjoy, disc golf can be fun and improve health at the same time.  Years ago, I remember playing a similar game we made up. Today’s game is much more developed. There are chains similar to a basketball net to toss the discs into with a whole course set up like traditional golf.  The popularity seems to be booming.

It Can Provide Exercise

When people play the game, they will do quite a bit of walking around the course.  It appears most could easily walk a mile or more as they play the game. It is a good low-stress exercise that allows the players to move at their own pace.  Since they can have fun as they walk, it does not seem like such a chore. Add in the opportunity to enjoy the natural setting and it makes a pleasant outdoor activity.

It Can Put People in Touch with Their Bodies

Understanding  and feeling how the body works is actually a big part of good health.  People need to have the chance to have a good perception of where they are in terms of space.  A feeling of being able to manage or control what they do is pretty significant. Sailing a disc through the air is fun but a bit of a challenge to make it do things.  Navigating around obstacles can test the mind as we calculate the moves. When someone feels that they have mastered the wind, it can mean a sense of success.

It Can Help Relieve Stress

Almost everyone needs some kind of relief from stress.  We have it in school, jobs, finance, and many other things.  It can make us physically, mentally, and emotionally ill. It can be critical to our health to manage it effectively.  Playing a game can take our minds off all that as we focus on the strategies of the game. It can be as if we have stepped into a different world.  Spend a couple of dollars on a disc and play a round. See what it can do for you.
