Protect Yourself From the Sun at All Times
By Tom Herrin
Even for those who were born and raised in areas where the sun is abundant most of the time, it is still critical to use whatever protection is available. For me, the Texas sun was blaring most of my life. As a child, I only remember being extra cautious in the heat waves of the 1950s. The rest of the time, we just got out there and stayed in the sun almost from morning until dark. It is not the wisest way to guard your health, since it is not actually guarding it at all. In today’s world, we are blessed with technology that allows us to develop plenty of ways to protect ourselves from the intense rays of the sun and some of the damage it can do.
Sunscreen Is a Necessity
No matter what type of skin people have, they are likely subject to some kinds of risks from the sun. Sunscreen comes in all kinds of strengths and varieties. For those who have skin that is sensitive to some ingredients, there are other kinds. There is little reason to disregard its use. People should use it frequently, especially during the midday hours when the sun is the most intense. There is nothing magic about changing of the seasons either, so it is best to use it year round. Tucson certainly has its share of exposure.
Sunglasses Can Slow Damage to Eyes
The eyes are constantly at risk from sun. It seems to contribute to many cataract problems. It also can have a blinding glare. Modern sunglasses are far better than they once were. Many of them can double as safety glasses. Most have a reasonable degree of UV protection. Best of all is that many pairs of sunglasses can be purchased at a low price. Unless a person is in need of some really stylish kind, they can be found at many places for $10 or less.
Find the Right Hat
There are all kinds of hats out there. Other than staying away from caps, which provide no protection for the neck, most kinds are good. I prefer a pretty wide brim. I generally wear a Panama style but sometimes wear what I call a farmhand hat. The point is to find one that is comfortable and that you will wear. Your health will be better for it.
