Can You Work Out While Sitting?
By Tom Herrin
With all the ways people go about working out in order to improve their health, it can get to be a pretty big list. The old-school ideas were simply getting out there and grinding away. Lifting weights, running, playing some highly active sport or numerous other things have all played their part. Many people still go through all of those when they are putting their list together. If someone had said they were working out while sitting down, most people would think it was ridiculous. That is not so much the case because it really can work. To soften that concept a little, the fact is that there are quite a few ways in which people can work out while simply sitting or standing. Isometrics can be a good way to get things done with little stress but good results.
They May Help Recover from Injuries
When people have injuries, it is important to have a good plan for rehabilitation. Many times, there is concern about adding more injury. With isometrics, people can work the muscles successfully without risking more damage or having problems with joints. As muscles are strengthened, they will provide more support for those parts that have been injured, allowing them a better chance of recovery.
They May Help Strengthen Muscles
A lot of people are concerned with strengthening muscles. It is difficult as they get older. Isometrics can be a very effective way to do that. Rather than struggle with lifting some heavy objects, a person can work against some immovable object, maybe even themselves. Holding a muscle contraction for a longer period of time can help to increase the mass. It has been said that regular isometric exercises may be able to strengthen muscles as much as 5 percent per week. That is pretty good progress.
It May Improve Mental Health
Working out is a great way to keep mentally upbeat. When you work out, your body will release chemicals that help you to feel better overall. Anytime I find myself a little depressed, I make it a point to exercise in some way. With isometrics, I can do that in little time or space. I have had great results in building muscles I have wanted to concentrate on. If you are looking for something new to you, try some isometrics for a few weeks and see the difference.
