You May Still Work Out at That Desk Job

By Tom Herrin

Many people struggle with ways to get the most out of their day.  That is, they try to pack in as many things as possible.  Exercise is sometimes that last item on the list but is really important.  People are tired from a long day at work, even though they may not have been doing activity that was physically stressful.  Sitting in a chair all day can be taxing in a different way.  People need some kind of exercise, and it can be done while they are sitting in that chair; results may be much more surprising than you might expect.

It May Help Develop the Arms

There are a variety of exercises that may be used to work on arm strength.  An easy one is for someone to sit up straight and grab each side of the chair.  Making an effort to try to lift the chair they are sitting in can tense up the arm muscles.  Continuing to pull upward for up to 10 seconds can produce pretty good results.  Repeating this exercise around five times can complete the activity.

It May Be Possible to Work the Hips

When people sit for long hours, it is quite natural for their body to become sore.  The hips, in particular, can feel worn and ache.  Exercising them is pretty easy.  One exercise is done by sitting up and lifting one foot a little off the ground.  The knee should be bent at a right angle as an attempt is made to hold the leg in position as long as possible.  It can be a pretty good workout as it will increase the blood flow to that area.  Switching legs and doing it with the other one can even out the exercise.

It May Be Whatever You Need

Working out while sitting at a desk is a good opportunity to customize your exercise routine.  Identifying those areas that you feel are in the greatest need can allow you to spend a little time in the middle of that busy day getting a few minutes of break.  It is a chance for exercise as well as some stimulation when you are sluggish and unproductive.  If you still feel a desire to have a more aggressive exercise, you can always do that.  For now, you will have get some good basic exercise that may keep some muscles in condition.  Try it and see what it can do for you.
