Tips for Keeping Healthy Kids This Summer
By Genevieve Cunningham
Summer is so much fun. But if you have kids, it's also stressful. Suddenly, you have kids at your home all day long. Kids to feed. Kids to keep active and entertained. It's a chore! But perhaps one of the best things that we can do for our kids in the summer is to keep them healthy. Left to themselves, kids will fill their time with TV, video games, and a ton of junk food! If you're interested in helping your children maintain their best health throughout the summer months, take a look at these tips for creating healthy summer habits and healthy kids too.
Spend a Lot of Time Outside
Don't let your kids stay in on the couch. Make them get outside. How? You'll probably have to get outside with them. Take the whole family outdoors for pool parties, picnics, camping trips, or days at the park. When you're outside, being active is much more likely. If you want your kids to stay moving, get outside and spend a lot of time (safely!) in the sun.
Watch the Snacks
Even though kids don't eat all day at school, there's something about summer vacation that seems to make their stomachs expand. The eating is nonstop! But luckily, kids can only eat what you buy for them. Make sure that you've filled the cabinets and refrigerator with healthy snacks. Fruit, veggies, nuts, and similar products make great snacks for kids in the summer. Avoid buying the junk, and your kids won't be able to eat it.
Limit Technology
We love technology, and it's possible that our kids actually love it more. If we allow it, they will undoubtedly spend all summer with their noses in their phones. Don't. You pay the bill. Set a limit! Make sure certain things are done before technology time is allowed. Set hours in the day. Do whatever you need to do to create firm boundaries regarding technology. Your kids might be mad, but their health will see serious improvement from this necessary limit.
It can be hard to keep your kids healthy. Kids have a mind of their own, and we can't always make them do what we want. But we can certainly give it our best shot through a good example and proper guidance. Use these tips to keep your kids healthy this summer, and set your family up for better health all year long.
