3 Ways to Keep the Weight Falling Off

By Genevieve Cunningham

Losing weight can be so hard. We have to work and plan and push through moments that feel impossible. When the weight finally starts to drop, it feels like such a relief! We feel like we're actually getting somewhere with all of our hard work. Of course, we know that the loss won't last forever, so it's important to make the most of it. If you want to keep the weight falling off for as long as you can, take a look at these tips to maximize weight loss before the plateau hits.

Lift Weights

Lifting weights is good for both building strength and losing weight. It takes more energy -- more calories -- to maintain muscles. So even when we're not exercising, our bodies have to use more of the calories that we've consumed. If you're not already using weights in your workout, it's time to start. Start with lighter weights, and add weight and reps as your muscles get stronger. The constant challenge will keep your body working and your calories burning.

Focus on Diet

We lose weight in the kitchen. Have you heard this saying before? We like to think that working out harder or longer will cause more weight to drop, and it can certainly help, but nothing will work as well as perfecting your diet. Focus on fueling your body with quality food. Stick to the major food groups -- fruit, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Limit sugar and junk food. Focusing on your diet and adding some moderate exercise is one of the best ways to drop weight for good.

Keep the Water Consumption Up

Most people simply don't drink enough water. Water is key to many functions in the body. It helps with digestion, helps clear the skin, and helps with general cognitive skills. And of course, it can help with weight loss. When we drink more water, we don't consume as many calories, and so we create more of a deficit and room for loss. It also helps flush toxins and waste from the body, which is an essential part of improving health as well. If weight loss -- or better health -- is the goal, consuming more water is an important part of the process.

Weight loss is not a walk in the park. It's a process, and it's definitely cyclical. Sometimes you'll lose like crazy, and sometimes you'll seem to hit a wall. The key is to maximize the moments of loss and keep pushing through the hard parts. You can do it! Use these tips to keep the weight falling so that you'll feel your best (and healthiest!) in no time at all.
