Look Like a Pro for College Move-In Day

By Donna Stark

Is your child getting ready to fly the coop and head off to college? Are they in their room packing things up and screaming for help? If so, take a minute or two to read the following tips so you can be prepared for what's to come. And what is that? Well, did you know that college move-in day may be one of the most stressful and emotional days you have in your lifetime? It's true! And because it's true, you should take a few proactive steps now so that the day will run as smoothly as it can.

Pack the Necessities

It's important to remember that space will be limited, so instead of watching your child pack all 25 pairs of shoes they own or their ridiculous number of stuffed animals from when they were young, why don't you suggest they edit their list and only pack the essentials? Another great tip while packing is to keep their clothes on the hangers. Tear a hole into the bottom of a garbage bag and insert the top of the hangers through the hole. Doing this will save a lot of precious time folding and unfolding. It may even free up a few extra suitcases too!

Order Online

Move-in day is hard, so keep as much stress out of it by ordering supplies or furniture online and choosing the store pickup option that many retailers offer. This will save you from dealing with all the madness and crazy crowds that are guaranteed to be found in the local stores. It will also help ensure you get what you need because many stores run out of items quickly.

Arrive on Time

To be as efficient as possible, many schools have specific arrival times for their students. This is done with the hope that there will be enough volunteers, handcarts, bins, and parking available for everyone. To avoid long wait times, limited parking, and mayhem at the elevators, make sure you arrive at your child's scheduled time. It will be a lot less stressful if you do.

Bring Your Own Equipment

Since there is a limited number of carts and bins provided by the school and a ton of boxes in the back of your car, you may want to bring something of your own. Grab that dolly or cart from the garage and make the day easier for everyone.

Calming Down the Move-In Day Nerves

Packing up and letting go is one of the saddest days of the year, but it doesn't have to be stressful either! By following the suggestions above, you can ensure the day will go as smoothly as it can! Good luck!
