Not All Hockey Is on Ice
By Tom Herrin
It is very likely that when people try to find some different kind of game to play, they may be a little stumped. Many people hit a proverbial brick wall when it comes to changing their routine. The standard activities often become so etched in the memory that there may be little room for anything that is a little outside the norm. One of those games that receives little attention these days is field hockey or gym hockey. So many dismiss hockey as a game that requires ice or fights that they simply don’t recognize what it has to offer. Not only is it fun, but it can also do a lot for building health.
It May Build Endurance
A lot of people tend to be pretty sedentary. It has become the nature of many jobs and even school for some kids. Spending large amounts of time on electronic devices translates into much less time on things that require getting out and being active. While people don’t have to spend the entire time running as they play, they will do quite a bit of stop-start activity. This can help to build greater amounts of endurance. After playing regularly for only a few times, the improvement may be obvious.
It May Help With Weight Loss
While losing weight is often a challenge and requires some dieting in order to be successful, exercising can be a big help. Once people become engaged in a game to the extent that they do a little more short bursts of running, they are sure to burn more calories. This rate of burn is generally calculated per pound of person. For those of us a little larger, it may mean a significant amount of calories burned.
It May Boost Mental Health
When we do multiple tasks, it can do much to improve our mental ability. In field or gym hockey, moving while trying to maneuver the puck takes some concentration. Anytime you add the additional factor of viewing the playing field and/or looking for the opportunity to play the puck to a teammate, the task becomes even more complex. If you are looking for a new game for the family or a group of friends, try some field hockey. The rules are simple, and the game can be fun for all ages. It is a great way to improve health.
