Keep the Water Flowing for Good Health

By Tom Herrin

It is really not that difficult to support health.  Most people are aware of the need for good food and exercise.  Rest is another thing that is pretty important.  Along with these is the need for an adequate amount of water.  In today's world, too many people get their supply of fluids from soft drinks or some other kind of artificial source.  While these can be good, it is best to drink water.  Drinking only a few glasses per day falls way short of what is needed.  The old saying that people need to drink eight glasses per day is probably not all bad, but that may still be short in many cases.  It is obvious that the amount needed may vary according to the activity.

Water Can Affect Energy and the Brain

It doesn't take much to result in dehydration for people.  Failing to take in enough water and activities that cause excessive fluid loss can take a pretty good toll.   Studies have shown that as little as 3 percent or less loss of fluid can interfere with normal brain function.  It may play a part in causing headaches as well as carrying out normal daily activities.  It is also believed to contribute to problems with memory and anxiety.  The fact that it can cause fatigue is commonly known, particularly among those who become overheated and lose water.

It May Help to Keep Bowels Working Well

Plenty of people have problems with constipation.  Sometimes this may be due to a poor diet that could be lacking adequate amounts of fiber and/or have excessive amounts of foods that have little or no real nutritional value.  When they take in enough water, they may expect to have more water content in the bowels.  This can play a big part in regularity and can often have results that are noticed quickly.

It May Help with Weight Loss

Most weight loss programs push the idea that people need to take in more water.  The simple fact is that it is critical to our health.  Any time I have started on a new phase of dieting, I have tried to make certain to take in more water.  It always pays off.  I try to drink at least a full glass of water before I go to bed and again when I get up in the morning.  If I happen to get up in the night, I try to drink some water then.  I also try to drink as much as possible throughout the day.  It is an important part of maintaining good health and is well worth giving the necessary attention.
