Never Despair When Time Is Short for Exercise

By Tom Herrin

When many people identify their need for more exercise, they often feel the pressure to cram in more than they are able to actually fit into their schedule.  For many, it is a simple human flaw.  Biting off more than they can chew is a bad habit that many have.  If they are trying to fit in more activity, they may sometimes shoot themselves in the foot.  That is, as they try to extend their workout, they may create such a hurried schedule that they fail to allow enough time to rest or unwind.  It can result in such a vicious circle that they experience no real benefit -- and may actually lose ground.  For those, as well as some others, a more compressed workout may be the right way to go.

The Easy Way to Go

Many people enjoy running.  For those who do, it is a simple way to burn calories and develop the cardiovascular system.  According to a study by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, those who run seven minutes per day are 45 percent less likely to die of heart disease.  This is a pretty significant number.  For those who are up to this, it can be a great way to compress that exercise program into a time frame that may free up more extra time.

Biking May Be an Option

While some are not cut out for running at the present time, many can still ride a bike.  This could be a standard bicycle or an exercise bike.  Either way, it is thought that 10 minutes or so on a bike may do the trick.

It Is Better to Enjoy the Time, Even If It Is Short

In most cases, it really is better to go for quality rather than quantity.  While we all want to get the most out of something, we can lull ourselves into believing that putting in more time is getting better results.  It is not always the case.  Those brief but well-organized sessions of exercise may be all it takes to get us pointed in the right direction.  Once we are on a good path, we can evaluate our progress and determine if we need to do more.  We may only need to modify and adjust.  The small bits of activity may produce the results we seek while leaving more time for us to enjoy some of the many other activities we do.
