Is It a Milk Day for You?

By Tom Herrin

Are there times when you drink lots of milk, and then are there other times when you forget it even exists?  That seems to be the way it is for many of us.  When we were young, milk was probably a staple in every meal.  In school, it is a critical part of meals that are served.  When I was young, not only did we have milk with our meals, but we also had a milk break in the middle of the morning.  It was considered to be a primary source of nutrition for children.  After all, we began life living on it.  As we became older, many of us may have forgotten how important it can be.  Some even have lost a taste for it completely .

Milk Has Some Great Things for Our Health

It is pretty widely known that milk can help build strong bones.  This is due largely to its calcium content.  Milk from cows contains a fair amount of calcium, and drinking it on a regular basis can help provide what small children need as they grow.  For adults, who may end up being deficient in calcium, drinking almond milk may help them to boost their levels as it contains even more than milk from cows.  Cows' milk is generally high in protein.  Some producers are able to boost the levels of this.

Some Are Sensitive to Milk

While milk can be really healthy for us, some individuals with it.  Milk allergies can be pretty severe in some cases.  It may cause digestive issues as well as other things.  Recognizing this may help to find good alternatives.  Some milk producers have been able to eliminate a protein in milk that can cause allergies while maintaining other healthy proteins in the product.  It may be worth your while to read the labels and make the best decision for you.

Make It Work for You

I enjoy drinking milk.  I drink it with many of my meals.  At times, I will drink it with added flavors such as chocolate or strawberry.  It can be a great way to ensure that I take in a sufficient amount of protein.  There are times, as I have grown older, when I have found myself a little low in calcium.  Because of that, I drink a glass of almond milk each night.  Since I have been doing that, I have boosted my calcium levels.  It has been a good plan for me.
