Slow Down and Get Your Life Back!
By Donna Stark
Many of us put in more than 40 hours a week to fulfill work obligations, pay off bills, and save for the future, but all of that extra time could be a major source of stress, especially when relationships with loved ones are affected. And when you add all the other things in life you are responsible for, your days can feel pretty overwhelming, can't they? Although desirable at first, living in the fast lane can certainly take its toll ... but what can you do to get some sense of your life back? Here are some suggestions that may prove to be helpful.
Embrace Gratitude
Has anybody ever reminded you to have an attitude of gratitude? Well, they may be on to something! Slowing down just enough to count your blessings could be exactly what you need to feel connected to everything around you. Take a look at the simple ways you can do this.
- Verbalize the things you are grateful for every morning
- Keep a gratitude journal and write in it every day
- Tell someone you love and appreciate them
- Spend time enjoying the beauty of nature
- Include a random act of kindness in your life each day
Treat Yourself Well
As important as self-care is, it is often the first thing to be pushed to the side, isn't it? And it's pushed to the side because you are working your tail off and time is limited, right? We all understand how difficult it can be to schedule your exercise and hobbies, and to nurture your relationships, but it's something that has to be done! Try to wake up earlier if you can to tackle those emails, learn to say "No" more often without feeling guilty about it, or include your family in your workouts. The time is there, you just need to find it.
Ask for Help
Sure, you like to do everything on your own, but how is that working out for you? If you are completely exhausted at the end of the day, resentful at work, or extra grumpy toward your loved ones, you may need to try something different and ask for help! Having the family pitch in with chores or sharing the workload with a coworker could make all the difference in the world. So, go ahead and ask for what you need. You may be surprised how easy it is to do so!
Slow Down and Get Your Life Back!
Even though there are plenty of things that promise to save time, there are still some of us that don't seem to ever have enough of it, and that can lead to poor health and fractured relationships. So, slow down and get out of the fast lane! You won't regret doing so one bit!
