How to Spot Good Friends and Keep Them
By Sandy Schroeder
Most of us are lucky enough to have memorable friends. They are the ones who always listen, help us smile, and come through no matter what it takes.
I am lucky enough to have some very special longtime friends in my town and some across the country. We have known each other forever and we always try our best to stay in touch. We have gone through success and loss, joy and sadness, but through it all we were always there for each other.
If you can relate, you may have wonderful friends too who are always there, and others who bob in and out of your life. Sorting through your friendships can help you recognize the differences. Good friends have very definite traits like these listed by MindBodyGreen.com
Loyalty that never fades - As we all take care of our families and handle everything else, loyal friends always check on each other and provide support whenever needed.
Honesty first - A good friend will always tell you the truth even when it hurts. They won't just gloss over problems and say things to keep you happy. Instead, they will roll up their sleeves and take the time to help you work things out.
Non-judgmental always - Over the years, friends' paths may change from yours, but true friends never criticize or question. They simply listen and open their hearts to see your viewpoint.
Totally trustworthy - True friends can always be counted on to show up, keep confidences, and value you and yours. As you watch your kids grow up, and your families evolve, it is second nature to share it all.
Always accepting - Many times my friends have watched me in move in a variety of directions. They may not have agreed, but they always backed me up in any way that they could. As one friend summed it up, "Hey, that's what friends are for."
Easy going - True friends do not demand constant attention. You both know you are there and would show up at a minute's notice. Meanwhile, you both go ahead with your life and when you can you sit down to a long lunch or a chat over coffee to update and reconnect with no effort at all.
Same sense of humor - Good friends often laugh together making light of their troubles and being grateful for their blessings. Whenever they get together, stories are exchanged along with lots of laughs. Friends always see the funny side just the way you do.
Sound view of what counts - No matter where you are or how you might have changed a good friend is glad to see you. That's why you are lucky to have them and vice versa.
