How to Maintain Healthy Winter Skin
By Donna Stark
Even if you live in a part of the country that is seasonably warmer than others, that doesn't mean the winter air will be kind to your skin. You will still need to take the right steps to protect it. But what exactly does that protection look like? Well, it involves more than just covering up! If you don't want to go through another season with dry, cracked, and bleeding skin, keep reading! Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have listed their favorite recommendations that are sure to make a difference with your skin this year.
Moisturize
That light, tinted moisturizer you were using during the summer may have been exactly what you needed then, but it won't hold a candle to the moisturizers you actually should be using during winter. The cooler months of the year call for a thicker, oil-based moisturizer that helps to seal in moisture. For maximum benefit, apply your moisturizer after you bathe and when your skin is still slightly damp. You won't believe the impact it can make.
Shorten Shower Time
You may not want to hear this, but those long, hot showers you love to take could be causing your skin to be dry. I know, I know ... it could be a hard thing to give up on those cold winter days, but if you do, your skin will love you for it. Protect the natural oils in your skin by choosing warm water instead of hot, shortening your shower time, and using a gentle, moisturizing cleanser.
Buy a Humidifier
Don't have a humidifier in your home? It may be time to get one! A humidifier helps to increase the level of moisture in the air, which will positively impact the health of your skin. Just be sure that when you do use one, you clean it regularly. Forgetting to do so will enable the growth of bacteria and could make everyone sick if inhaled.
Stay Hydrated
You can easily reverse the loss of moisture during the winter by making sure you are drinking the recommended amount of water every day. Keep plenty of water by your side, and if you are chilly? Don't worry! You can also stay hydrated enough by drinking green tea or hot water with lemon.
Healthy Winter Skin
Don't let dry, painful skin become a part of your winter attire. Follow the skincare tips the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have listed above and enjoy this season while it lasts!
