Keeping it Healthy Through the Holidays

By Rachel Shouse

Sticking to a certain exercise routine and diet can be made more difficult through the holidays. Your focus is on other things during this time of year. While it may not look the same, it's still good to take time to find alternative ways to enjoy this season. A few ways to make this holiday happier and healthier are maintaining your exercise routine, avoiding unnecessary weight gain, and by connecting with family and friends in ways that are safe.

Maintaining Your Exercise Routine at Home or While You Travel

It can be hard to keep up with your normal routines when you feel like you couldn't be busier. There are likely errands to run, kids to take here and there, housework, etc. Don't let this time knock you off your game though. While not easy, you can keep up with your exercise regimen even during busy times.

Most people can find a little bit of time in their day. Doctors say you should get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. You could do this by watching your favorite show while you walk. This works for those who are staying home and for those who are traveling. Try to stay motivated and focus on your goals.

Avoiding Unnecessary Weight Gain This Year

If you're cooking at home there are a few ways to avoid eating too much. Before you start cooking you should eat a little something. This helps keep you from eating too much once dinner's ready or snacking while you cook.

You may be traveling this year. A great way to avoid excessive eating while at someone else's home is to stay away from the food. A lot of people tend to gather around it, which is great. However, if this is an area that you struggle with, try to hang out away from the table. By the way, seconds are fine. Don't be too strict with yourself, but it's important to remain mindful.

Alternative Ways to Connect This Holiday Season

You don't have to be a computer expert in order to communicate and connect with your family and friends this year. You can google exactly how you want to communicate. If you just want to talk, then of course a phone call is the clear answer. If you want to video chat though, you may need to download something for that. There are a multitude of options, you just need to choose what's best for you.

Your main focus should be on enjoying your holidays. These are all important things to be mindful of, but don't let yourself suffer from worry or anxiety over it. Plan some anxiety preventatives if you feel overwhelmed right now. Deep breathing and essential oils are easy to do away from home.
